The Automotive Trunk Support System: The Invisible Guardian of Convenience

Oct 16, 2025

The modern automobile trunk is a multifunctional space that combines storage, access, and aesthetics. Its smooth opening, stable positioning, and quiet closing rely on a sophisticated set of "behind-the-scenes" components—the trunk support system. This system typically consists of a power liftgate drive mechanism, damped hinges, and support springs or gas struts, often covered with flocking.

Silent Support: Springs and Dampers

In non-powered or base model vehicles, trunk opening primarily relies on torsion springs or gas struts. Torsion springs are usually hidden within the hinges. When the latch is released, their stored elastic potential energy is instantly released, providing the initial upward assist for the heavy tailgate. Gas struts, utilizing internal high-pressure nitrogen and a precise oil circuit, provide continuous support force during opening and produce a gentle damping effect during closing, ensuring a smooth motion and preventing violent impact.

Elegant Touch: The Flocking Process

To enhance the sense of quality and quietness, many vehicle models apply a flocking process to the exterior of the support struts or to spring components that contact the body. This layer of fine, soft fibrous material effectively eliminates potential noise caused by vibration between components and prevents direct contact and scraping between metal parts and the vehicle's paintwork. When operating the trunk, this silent, seamless operation delivers a more premium and refined user experience.

Intelligent Evolution: The Power Liftgate

Power liftgate technology elevates convenience to a new level. It uses a built-in electric motor drive system (often integrated within the struts or near the hinges) to replace or assist the traditional mechanical springs. With a simple press of a button, touch of a sensor, or use of the remote key fob, the tailgate automatically opens and closes. Advanced power liftgates also feature:

Smart Anti-pinch Function: Automatically stops and reverses if an obstacle is encountered during the closing cycle.

Height Memory Setting: Allows users to set a specific opening height according to their preference.

Quiet Operation: Precision motors and transmission systems ensure operation is far quieter than the 'twang' or 'thud' of mechanical springs.

Synergistic Operation

In practical application, these components often work in concert. For instance, a power liftgate system might still incorporate auxiliary springs to balance part of the door's weight, reducing the motor's load. Meanwhile, the flocking process is commonly applied to the surfaces of support struts across all high-end models, regardless of whether they are powered.

Durability and Reliability

Considering the frequent daily use of the trunk and its exposure to extreme temperature variations, these support components are designed to be extremely robust and durable. The motors and control units for power liftgates also undergo rigorous endurance testing to ensure stable performance throughout the vehicle's entire lifecycle.

It is these precision engineering elements, hidden from view, that collectively guarantee the ease, stability, and tranquility of every trunk operation, silently safeguarding the convenience and elegance of the driving experience, often without the user even noticing.
